The Faculty of Arts, Maldives National University, organised an Information Session on Local Governance Systems on 7 May 2024, delivered by officials from the Local Government Authority (LGA). The session focused on the “Decentralisation System in the Maldives” and provided students with practical insights into local governance and the functioning of the decentralisation system.
More than 50 students from all batches of the Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Relations (BAPIR), Master of Arts in Social Policy (MASP), and Master of Arts in International Affairs (MAPIA) participated in the session. Students engaged with LGA officials through a question-and-answer session, allowing them to explore practical challenges and issues related to local government in the Maldives.
The session strengthened students’ understanding of decentralisation, local governance and institutional responsibilities by connecting academic learning with practical experiences from public-sector officials. The direct engagement also encouraged informed discussion on the role of local institutions and the importance of effective governance in responding to community needs.
By providing students with practical knowledge of governance systems and opportunities for direct dialogue with government officials, the session contributed to quality education and supported the development of informed graduates with a stronger understanding of public institutions and civic governance.
The initiative aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4: Quality Education and 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
