The Maldives National University (MNU) has reinforced its commitment to research excellence and academic professional development through an introductory workshop titled “Qualitative Data Using NVivo,” aimed at equipping academic staff with practical digital skills to organize, analyze, and interpret qualitative research data systematically.
The workshop focused on strengthening researchers’ ability to manage complex qualitative information and generate meaningful insights from interviews, documents, and other research materials. By introducing NVivo as a tool for structured data analysis, the programme sought to enhance research efficiency while supporting rigorous and transparent academic inquiry.
A central component of the training was familiarizing participants with the essential functions of NVivo, including creating research projects, importing data, coding information, and developing analytical categories. These processes help researchers organize large volumes of qualitative material, identify recurring themes, and establish connections between different sources of evidence.
The programme also highlighted the importance of documenting the analytical process through the use of research memos. Participants explored how memos can be used to record emerging ideas, methodological reflections, and decisions made during analysis. This approach encourages greater transparency and supports the development of well-documented, credible research findings.
Identifying patterns and presenting research results formed another key focus of the workshop. Academic staff were introduced to NVivo’s search and query functions, which can assist researchers in examining relationships, exploring themes, and investigating patterns within qualitative datasets.
The training further explored the use of maps and tables to organize and communicate research findings. By presenting analytical results through clear visual and structured formats, researchers can make complex information more accessible and strengthen the communication of evidence to academic and professional audiences.
Beyond software proficiency, the workshop emphasized the importance of thoughtful interpretation and sound research judgement. While digital tools can support the organization and examination of data, the programme reinforced the value of researchers’ critical thinking and methodological understanding in producing meaningful conclusions.
The initiative also highlighted MNU’s continued investment in strengthening institutional research capacity through targeted professional development. By improving academic staff’s confidence in using digital research tools, the university aims to encourage more systematic qualitative inquiry, support scholarly productivity, and contribute to knowledge creation across academic disciplines.
Aligned with priorities of quality education, lifelong learning, digital literacy, research innovation, professional capacity development, evidence-based knowledge creation, and strong academic institutions, the workshop reflects MNU’s commitment to advancing research quality and equipping its academic community with practical competencies for rigorous and impactful scholarship.
