The Maldives National University (MNU) has strengthened its commitment to research excellence and academic capacity development through an advanced professional training programme titled “Data Analysis Using R,” aimed at equipping academic staff with specialised analytical skills to manage complex datasets, apply statistical techniques, and make evidence-informed research decisions.
Facilitated by Dr. Ali Fawaz Shareef, the programme was designed for academic staff with foundational knowledge of R who sought to expand their technical capabilities and deepen their understanding of data analysis. Building on existing competencies, the training introduced advanced methods relevant to research across a range of academic disciplines.
A central focus of the programme was advanced data cleaning, highlighting the importance of preparing datasets carefully before conducting statistical analysis. The training explored approaches to improving data quality and consistency, recognising that reliable research findings depend on accurate and well-organised information.
The programme also addressed advanced statistical analysis, encouraging participants to consider appropriate analytical methods for examining data, identifying relationships, and interpreting research results. By strengthening methodological understanding, the training aimed to help academic staff approach more complex research questions with greater confidence and analytical rigour.
Sentiment analysis and cluster analysis formed two specialised components of the training. Sentiment analysis introduced approaches to examining opinions, attitudes, and patterns within textual information, while cluster analysis focused on identifying meaningful groupings and similarities within datasets. These techniques offer researchers additional ways to investigate complex information and explore patterns that may not be immediately apparent through conventional analysis.
Beyond technical procedures, the workshop emphasised the importance of interpreting analytical results critically and selecting methods that are appropriate to the research question. This focus on sound methodological judgement reinforced the role of statistical reasoning in producing credible findings and avoiding unsupported conclusions.
The training also highlighted the value of developing proficiency in digital research tools as part of continuous academic professional development. By extending staff members’ existing knowledge of R, MNU aims to support more systematic research practices, strengthen analytical independence, and encourage the effective use of data in academic inquiry.
Strengthening advanced data analysis competencies can contribute to improved research quality, clearer communication of findings, and more informed academic decision-making. Such skills are increasingly relevant as researchers work with larger and more diverse datasets and seek to generate meaningful evidence to address educational and societal challenges.
Aligned with priorities of quality education, lifelong learning, digital literacy, research innovation, professional capacity development, evidence-based decision-making, and knowledge creation, the programme reflects MNU’s continued efforts to equip its academic workforce with advanced analytical competencies and promote rigorous, data-driven research across the university.
