MNU Library Receives Vice Chancellor’s Newly Launched Book on Maldivian Ethnomathematics titled “Mathematical thinking in the Maldives”
The Maldives National University (MNU) Library is pleased to announce the addition of a significant new publication to its collection following the official launch of Mathematical Thinking in the Maldives: Ethnomathematics, Cultural Heritage, and Curriculum Integration, authored by Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam, Vice Chancellor of The Maldives National University.
As part of the launch, Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam generously donated a copy of the book to the MNU Library, further enriching the University’s academic resources and preserving an important contribution to Maldivian scholarship. The Library is honoured to receive this valuable publication and extends its sincere appreciation to Dr. Shehenaz for her generous donation.
The book presents an in-depth exploration of ethnomathematics in the Maldivian context, examining how mathematical knowledge has evolved through the nation’s cultural heritage, traditional practices, and everyday life. It explores historical counting and measuring systems, the influence of different cultures on Maldivian mathematical traditions, indigenous methods of measurement, and the role of mathematics in social and cultural contexts. The publication also introduces a curriculum model that demonstrates how Maldivian cultural knowledge can be meaningfully integrated into mathematics education, supporting culturally responsive teaching and learning.
By documenting indigenous mathematical practices and connecting them with contemporary educational approaches, this work makes a valuable contribution to research in mathematics education, cultural studies, curriculum development, and the preservation of Maldivian heritage. It serves as an important resource for researchers, educators, students, and anyone interested in the intersection of mathematics, culture, and education in the Maldives.
The MNU Library is proud to include this important publication in its collection and encourages members of the University community to explore this insightful work, which celebrates the rich mathematical traditions embedded within Maldivian society while contributing to the advancement of knowledge and education.
The Maldives National University Library congratulates Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam on the successful launch of this remarkable publication and thanks her for this generous contribution to the Library’s collection and to the nation’s academic heritage.
