The Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS), Maldives National University (MNU) conducted a professional development programme for teachers from Thireeha Institution on 10 September 2026, bringing together approximately 80 female Islam and Quran teachers for a day of professional learning, reflection, and collaboration.

The programme commenced with a Dharus session facilitated by Senior lecturer, from the Faculty of Shariah and Law, providing participants with an opportunity for spiritual reflection and professional inspiration. The session set the foundation for a day focused on enhancing teaching practice and strengthening professional relationships among educators.

The morning workshop, facilitated by lecturers Hasma Waheed, Aishath Rihula, and Fathimath Minna from the Centre for Foundation Studies, centred on Effective Communication and Team Building and Collaboration. Through interactive activities and discussions, participants explored the importance of clear communication, active listening, teamwork, and collaborative problem-solving in fostering positive learning environments and strengthening professional communities within schools.

The afternoon session, Effective Teaching and Learning Strategies for Islam and Quran Education, was delivered by Senior lecturer Mohamed Riyaz, from the Faculty of Education. The workshop focused on learner-centred pedagogical approaches, practical classroom strategies, and methods for enhancing student engagement and understanding within Islam and Quran education. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their current practices and identify innovative approaches that could be implemented within their own classrooms.

The programme reflects MNU’s ongoing commitment to supporting the professional growth of educators and strengthening educational quality through meaningful capacity-building initiatives. By providing opportunities for continuous professional development, MNU aims to empower teachers with the knowledge, skills, and collaborative networks necessary to meet the evolving needs of learners and educational institutions.

The initiative also contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, particularly through the promotion of lifelong learning and the enhancement of teacher competencies. Furthermore, by supporting the professional development of a predominantly female teaching workforce, the programme aligns with broader efforts to advance SDG 5: Gender Equality through educational and professional empowerment.

Furthermore, the collaboration between MNU and Thireeha Institution reflects SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, demonstrating the importance of partnerships between higher education institutions and schools in strengthening educational capacity, sharing expertise, and creating meaningful opportunities for professional development. Such collaborative efforts contribute to building stronger educational networks and advancing quality education across the Maldives.
