A Historic Milestone: MNU School of Medicine Receives Recognition from the United Kingdom's General Medical Council

Date: 11th June 2026

The Maldives National University (MNU) is proud to announce a landmark achievement for medical education in the Maldives. The United Kingdom’s General Medical Council (GMC) has confirmed that the Primary Medical Qualification (PMQ) awarded by the MNU School of Medicine currently meets the criteria for an acceptable overseas qualification. This recognition places MNU among a select group of institutions worldwide whose medical qualifications are acknowledged by one of the most respected medical regulatory bodies in the world — and marks a defining moment in the history of medical education in the Maldives.

What This Recognition Means
The GMC’s confirmation carries significant and far-reaching implications for MNU graduates, the School of Medicine, and the broader development of healthcare in the Maldives.
As a direct result of this recognition, eligible graduates of the MNU School of Medicine may now apply for the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) examination and GMC registration without their medical qualifications being subject to individual assessment by the GMC.
In practical terms, this means that MNU medical graduates pursuing careers and professional development pathways in the United Kingdom will benefit from a significantly more accessible route to registration a development that substantially enhances the value and international standing of an MNU medical degree.
This achievement affirms that the quality and standards of medical education delivered by the MNU School of Medicine meet internationally recognised benchmarks  and reflects the University’s unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching, clinical training, and professional education.

A Collective Achievement
This milestone is not the result of any single effort. It is the culmination of years of sustained dedication from every member of the MNU medical education community. MNU extends its deepest appreciation to the academic staff, clinical educators, affiliated hospitals, healthcare professionals, students, alumni, administrators, and stakeholders whose collective commitment has driven the continued strengthening of medical education and training in the Maldives. Their tireless work to uphold and elevate the standards of the University’s medical programme has been instrumental in reaching this landmark moment.
To every faculty member who taught with rigour and passion, every clinical doctor who guided students through the complexities of patient care, every affiliated institution that opened its doors to MNU learners, and every student who committed to the demanding journey of medical education this recognition belongs to you.

A New Chapter for MNU Graduates
For current students and future graduates of the MNU School of Medicine, this recognition opens meaningful new horizons. The ability to pursue GMC registration and the PLAB pathway without individual qualification assessment removes a significant barrier for those who aspire to practise, train, or advance their careers in the United Kingdom. It also sends a powerful signal to prospective students both within the Maldives and internationally that a medical degree from MNU is one that is recognised, respected, and valued on the world stage.

MNU remains committed to continuously enhancing the quality of its academic programmes, expanding opportunities for graduates, and strengthening its contribution to the development of the national healthcare workforce and the broader global medical community.
