The Department of Social Sciences of The Maldives National University (MNU) conducted a career guidance session on journalism for students of Madrasathul Arabiyyathul Islamiyya, providing students with knowledge about journalism, media practices and potential career pathways in the communications field.
Led by expert lecturers from the Department of Social Sciences, the interactive session introduced students to key areas of modern journalism, including investigative reporting, media ethics and digital media broadcasting. The lecturers shared academic and practical insights into the role of journalism in informing the public and contributing to informed public discourse.
The session provided students with an opportunity to connect academic knowledge with real-world media practices. Through interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions, students explored different career pathways within journalism and communication, including photojournalism, news anchoring and other media-related roles.
The activity also encouraged students to develop a deeper understanding of the responsibilities associated with journalism, including ethical reporting, responsible communication and the importance of accurate information in public discourse. By engaging directly with university lecturers, students gained knowledge and perspectives to support their future educational and career choices.
The session contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing students with additional learning opportunities, practical knowledge and career guidance beyond the classroom. It also supports SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) through its focus on journalism, media ethics, responsible reporting and the role of the press in promoting informed public discourse and access to reliable information.
