The Maldives National University has signed a contract agreement with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, marking a significant step towards strengthening national efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainable natural resource management.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam, Vice Chancellor of MNU, and Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Tourism and Environment. The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry, and MNU Chancellor, Dr. Mahamood Shougee and Senior officials and staffs of MNU.
This collaboration reflects the shared national commitment of both institutions, demonstrating the importance placed at the highest level on environmental conservation and sustainable development. The agreement builds on the ongoing work carried out under the Endheri Project, which has already delivered meaningful contributions to national capacity-building in environmental protection.
Under the Endheri Project, the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the MNU Gan Campus successfully conducted a ranger training program, equipping practitioners with essential scientific knowledge and field skills. This initiative underscored the value of blending academic expertise with practical training to support those working directly in environmental protection roles.
To expand on this foundation, MNU announced the development of a new Certificate Level 4 course titled “Advanced Certificate in Protected Areas Management and Ranger Training.” This program will enhance the professional skills of rangers across the Maldives and further strengthen the management of protected areas.
As an additional milestone under the newly signed agreement, the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will introduce a new “Diploma in Marine Protected Areas.” This specialized program aims to build the technical capacity needed to effectively protect, manage, and sustainably utilize the Maldives’ delicate and invaluable marine ecosystems. Training is scheduled to begin in 2026, and the University anticipates that these courses will play a vital role in producing well-trained professionals who can contribute meaningfully to national environmental priorities.
The Maldives National University remains committed to advancing knowledge, research, and capacity-building in environmental protection, strengthening national efforts to safeguard the natural heritage on which the country depends.
