The Maldives National University (MNU) Library conducted a hands-on professional development session titled “AI for Smarter Libraries” for MNU Library staff. The session explored the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in academic library services and information management.

Facilitated by Dr. Ali Fawaz Shareef, the session introduced participants to the growing applications of AI within the library and information sector. Particular emphasis was placed on how AI tools can support information discovery and retrieval, assist with compiling and organizing information, guide users towards appropriate academic resources, enhance user services and improve day-to-day library operations.

Through practical demonstrations and activities, staff gained valuable insights into the effective and responsible use of AI tools in a library environment. The session also encouraged participants to consider innovative ways of using emerging technologies to better support the information and research needs of MNU students and academic staff.

The training forms part of MNU Library’s continuing commitment to strengthening the digital competencies of its staff and promoting the effective adoption of emerging technologies. Through professional development initiatives such as this, the Library continues to equip its staff with relevant knowledge and skills to respond to technological change and enhance the quality of services provided to the University community.
