BA-LIM Students Lead Community Fundraising for Professional Development

05 June 2026

The Professional Development Workshop on Library and Information Services (PDWL) and Faculty Development Programme (FDP) 2026 Fundraising Movie Day provided an inclusive and affordable opportunity for children, families and members of the wider community to engage with the university through a shared cultural and recreational experience. The afternoon movie screening brought community members together while supporting a wider professional development initiative.

The event was organised collaboratively by Bachelor of Arts in Library and Information Management (BA-LIM) students, alumni and the Maldives Library Association as part of fundraising efforts to support professional development opportunities. Funds raised through the initiative will contribute to capacity-building activities that support the continued development of the Library and Information Science sector.

The movie day also provided students, alumni and professionals with practical opportunities to develop leadership, event management, teamwork and collaborative skills. Through their involvement in organising and delivering a community-based activity, participants were able to apply their skills in a practical setting while engaging with members of the wider community.

By connecting community engagement with professional development, the initiative demonstrated how collaborative activities can create accessible opportunities for participation while contributing to the development of students and professionals. The collaboration between BALIM students, alumni and the Maldives Library Association also strengthened connections between the university, the professional community and the wider public.

The initiative contributes to quality education and professional skills development, while supporting inclusive participation, community engagement and partnerships that strengthen opportunities within the Library and Information Science sector.

The initiative aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4: Quality Education, 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, 10: Reduced Inequalities, 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
