Clustered Archive Session by Barnacles Connects Youth with Libraries and Learning Opportunities

16 July 2026

The Clustered Archive Session by Barnacles, organised through a collaboration between Barnacles, Maldives National University (MNU), and the Maldives Library Association (MLA), provided young participants with an opportunity to explore the role of libraries in preserving knowledge, supporting lifelong learning, and strengthening informed communities.

The session introduced participants to the importance of libraries and information services in providing access to knowledge and supporting learning beyond the classroom. Through the engagement, young people gained greater awareness of how libraries contribute to education, information access, knowledge preservation, and the development of informed and active communities.

A key component of the session was introducing participants to library services and information literacy. The engagement highlighted the importance of being able to identify, access, evaluate, and use information effectively in an increasingly information-rich environment. By developing these skills, young people can become more confident in navigating information and making informed decisions in their academic, professional, and everyday lives.

The session also provided participants with information about Library and Information Management education at MNU, introducing pathways for young people interested in pursuing further education and professional opportunities in the library and information services field. This connection between youth engagement and higher education helped participants gain a better understanding of the opportunities available to develop careers within the information and knowledge sector.

The collaboration between Barnacles, MNU, and MLA further demonstrated the value of partnerships in creating meaningful learning opportunities for young people. By bringing together community engagement, higher education, and professional expertise, the session created a platform for participants to interact with knowledge institutions and explore opportunities for continued learning and professional development.

The activity also highlighted the continuing relevance of libraries in building inclusive and resilient communities. Libraries serve not only as places for accessing books and information, but also as spaces that support education, knowledge sharing, community participation, and lifelong learning. Introducing young people to these roles can contribute to a stronger appreciation of libraries and other knowledge institutions within society.

Through its focus on learning opportunities, information literacy, and youth engagement, the Clustered Archive Session by Barnacles contributed to Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, particularly by promoting lifelong learning and access to relevant knowledge and skills. The activity also supported SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities by highlighting the role of accessible knowledge and learning opportunities in enabling wider participation in education and professional development.

The session further contributed to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by promoting awareness of libraries as community-based knowledge institutions that contribute to informed and resilient communities. Its emphasis on information literacy and informed participation also aligns with SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, particularly through strengthening access to information and encouraging informed and responsible participation in society.

The collaboration between Barnacles, MNU, and MLA reflects the importance of partnerships in expanding educational and community opportunities. In this regard, the activity contributed to SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, demonstrating how cooperation between youth organisations, higher education institutions, and professional associations can create meaningful learning experiences and strengthen community engagement.

Through initiatives such as the Clustered Archive Session, the Faculty of Arts continues to support opportunities that connect young people with education, professional pathways, libraries, and knowledge institutions, while promoting lifelong learning and informed participation in society.
