The Maldives National University (MNU) welcomed students from The University of Tokyo for a one-day academic and cultural exchange on 6 September 2026, providing an opportunity for meaningful peer-to-peer learning, intercultural engagement, and knowledge sharing between students from the two universities.

As part of the programme, each visiting student was paired with an MNU student to encourage direct interaction and the exchange of ideas and perspectives. The programme introduced the visiting students to the Maldives through a series of lectures and discussions exploring the country’s history, culture, society, and unique vulnerabilities as a Small Island Developing State.

The academic sessions provided a platform for students to engage in discussions on the opportunities and challenges facing the Maldives, while gaining a deeper appreciation of the country’s social, environmental, and developmental context. The peer-to-peer format further encouraged students to learn from one another and develop greater intercultural awareness.

The visiting students also toured different faculties at MNU, engaging with academic communities and gaining insight into the University’s diverse fields of study and learning environment. The programme continued with a visit to MNU’s Faculty of Maritime Studies in Villingili, with the group travelling by ferry and experiencing the island setting while continuing their academic and cultural exchange.

The exchange reflects MNU’s commitment to creating opportunities for international engagement and experiential learning, while strengthening connections between higher education institutions and fostering greater understanding among students from different cultural backgrounds.

The programme also contributed to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, through experiential and peer-to-peer learning; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by highlighting the Maldives’ island context and vulnerabilities as a Small Island Developing State; SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, through intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding, and responsible global citizenship; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through academic and cultural collaboration between MNU and the University of Tokyo.

Through initiatives such as this, MNU continues to promote international collaboration, intercultural understanding, and knowledge exchange, demonstrating the important role of higher education in connecting communities and advancing sustainable development.
