Maldives National University and Curtin University Students Unite for a Collaborative Design Workshop

Posted on 09 November 2025

Architecture students from the Maldives National University (FEST – MNU) and Curtin University (Perth) came together this week for an inspiring collaborative design workshop that celebrated creativity, culture, and shared learning.

During the session, Curtin University students presented their design concepts for a Community Structure in Kulhudhuffushi. Working alongside MNU students, they refined these ideas to reflect local context, culture, and community needs — a true exchange of perspectives between the Maldives and Western Australia.

The Session started with a cross-introduction of the cultural and the geographical context of the Maldives and Perth, Western Australia. During the session, participants of the workshop developed sketch ideas for a Community Structure that will be built in Kulhudhuffushi by the Curtin students later during their visit to the Maldives. The students contributed their knowledge and technical skills to manifest the creative ‘synergy’ to develop unique concepts reflecting local context, culture, and community needs.

The workshop also gave opportunity for potential participants of an upcoming collaboration in 2027 to meet and get to know each other. This study will be focused on exploring adaptive reuse models for the historic ruins of Tholhendhoo Island in the Noonu atoll. This forward-looking project aims to explore how architectural innovation can bring heritage back to life through critical analysis and design.

Students from both universities engaged in meaningful discussions on the contrasts and connections between planning and design practices in their regions, highlighting the richness of cultural diversity. The day concluded with a city exploration walk and a joint dinner offering a chance to build friendships and deepen cross-cultural understanding.

A selected group of MNU students will be joining the Curtin team on their visit to the Tholhendhoo island, contributing to early documentation efforts and laying the groundwork for the 2027 project.

This collaborative initiative marked a creative journey that connected cultures, fostered innovation, and strengthened the bond between two universities committed to shaping the future of architecture and planning through shared experiences and design excellence.
