Visit to ORP facility

24th May 2025

A visit to the Olive Ridley Project (ORP) facility at One & Only Reethi Rah offered a unique opportunity to witness marine conservation in action. The resort partners with the UK-based charity to operate a Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre where injured turtles receive specialized care before being released back into the ocean. CFOS students visited the facility and spent an afternoon learning about the work carried out there, including the rescue, treatment, and rehabilitation of turtles injured by ghost gear, boat strikes, and other human-related threats. The students gained insight into the daily operations of the centre, from wound care and feeding to physiotherapy and pre-release assessments, as well as the importance of documenting each case to inform broader conservation strategies. The ORP team also highlighted the critical role of community engagement and education in reducing threats to sea turtles, which are protected under Maldivian law and listed as endangered or vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. For the visiting students, the afternoon provided a tangible example of how partnerships between the tourism industry and conservation organisations can deliver meaningful outcomes for marine wildlife, while inspiring the next generation of marine scientists to contribute to turtle conservation efforts in the Maldives and beyond.
