MNU Heads Workshop Strengthens Leadership, AI-Ready Assessment and Sustainable University Governance

28 October 2025

The Maldives National University (MNU) has reinforced its commitment to effective leadership and institutional development through a Heads Workshop that brought together discussions on strategic direction, artificial intelligence in assessment, academic governance, and sustainability in higher education.

The workshop addressed key challenges facing university leaders as higher education institutions navigate rapid technological change, evolving academic expectations, and increasing demands for accountable and sustainable decision-making. By bringing these priorities into a single professional development programme, the initiative sought to strengthen leadership competencies and encourage informed approaches to institutional planning and management.

A key component of the programme was the “Way Forward” session led by Dr. Shehenaz, which provided a platform for considering the university’s future direction and the importance of strategic leadership in responding to emerging opportunities and challenges. The session highlighted the role of institutional leaders in guiding academic development and supporting continuous improvement.

The growing influence of artificial intelligence in higher education was explored during “Assessment in the AI Era,” facilitated by Dr. Fawaz. The discussion brought attention to the changing landscape of student assessment and the need for academic leaders to consider how emerging technologies may influence evaluation practices, academic integrity, and the reliability of learning outcomes. The session underscored the importance of informed decision-making as universities adapt assessment approaches to an increasingly AI-enabled educational environment.

Institutional governance formed another major focus of the workshop, with Shaheen from MNU Business School facilitating a session on the roles, responsibilities, and good governance practices of deans. The discussion explored the importance of clear leadership responsibilities, professional accountability, and effective governance in supporting transparent and consistent academic administration.

Sustainability was also a central theme, with Dr. Ibrahim and Dr. Shiyama leading a session on sustainability competencies for higher education leaders. The programme highlighted the importance of integrating sustainability considerations into university leadership, institutional planning, and decision-making, recognising the role of higher education institutions in contributing to long-term social, environmental, and economic development.

By connecting strategic leadership with technological adaptation, governance, and sustainability, the workshop encouraged a more integrated approach to university management. The programme emphasised that effective academic leadership requires not only operational expertise but also the ability to respond thoughtfully to emerging challenges while maintaining institutional accountability and educational quality.

The initiative reflects MNU’s continued emphasis on developing leadership capacity and strengthening institutional resilience. Through targeted professional development, the university aims to support leaders in making informed decisions, promoting responsible governance, and advancing sustainable practices across academic and administrative functions.

Aligned with priorities of quality education, responsible artificial intelligence, ethical governance, strong and accountable institutions, leadership capacity development, sustainability competencies, lifelong learning, and sustainable institutional development, the Heads Workshop contributes to MNU’s efforts to build a forward-looking, responsive, and resilient higher education institution.
