The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at the Maldives National University (MNU) recently organized a special session on marine mammals in the Maldives for students of CHSE Malé, featuring renowned marine biologist Dr. Charles Anderson as the guest speaker. Dr. Anderson is a leading authority on Maldivian marine life, having lived and worked in Malé since 1983. He has conducted long-term, systematic research on the whales and dolphins of Maldivian waters.

The session focused on the cetaceans—whales and dolphins—found in Maldivian waters. Between 1990 and 2002, Dr. Anderson recorded nearly 2000 cetacean sightings in Maldivian waters. As a key institution for marine science education in the Maldives, CFOS continues to strengthen the connection between secondary and higher education through such initiatives, inspiring the next generation’s interest in ocean research and nurturing future marine science talent for the Maldives.
