Education That Creates Opportunity: Minister Calls for Evidence-Based Programmes and Stronger Regional Access

MNU Hithadhoo Campus | 12 October 2026

Higher education must be measured not merely by the qualifications it awards, but by the opportunities it creates and its contribution to national development.

This message was central to the Minister of Education and Higher Education’s visit to MNU Hithadhoo Campus, accompanied by the MNU Chancellor and State Minister Hussain Saeed. The delegation was warmly welcomed by students and staff, alongside Faculty of Education Dean Nadhiya, the Campus Manager, Deputy Director, and academic, administrative and support staff.

The Minister emphasised the need for evidence-based academic programme selection, stressing that courses must respond to national workforce demands and offer meaningful employment prospects. Programmes without clear future opportunities, he cautioned, risk wasting students’ valuable time and resources.

He further highlighted the importance of strengthening regional mobility and access to higher education, alongside developing qualified local teachers, particularly for secondary education.

Beyond academic provision, the Minister underscored MNU’s responsibility to help build a respectful, responsible and self-reliant society, positioning higher education as a driver of social progress and national resilience.

These priorities directly advance SDG 4 (Quality Education), while supporting SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The discussions also reinforce the MNU Strategic Plan 2026–2030, particularly academic excellence, people development, institutional accountability, student-centred education and wider national and regional engagement.

For MNU Hithadhoo Campus, the visit reaffirmed a vital commitment: to connect educational opportunities with the real needs of communities and the nation, ensuring that learning leads to meaningful futures.
