The Maldives National University (MNU) and Kulhudhuffushi City Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 30 August 2026, establishing a framework for collaboration in research, biodiversity conservation, information exchange, capacity building, and environmental awareness.

The MoU aims to strengthen joint efforts to better understand, protect, and promote the sustainable management of Kulhudhuffushi’s valuable wetland and marine ecosystems. Through this partnership, MNU and Kulhudhuffushi City Council will collaborate on research initiatives and programmes focused on biodiversity and environmental conservation.

As part of the agreement, the two institutions will work together to identify and document species found within kulhi (wetland) ecosystems and other habitats, while supporting the collection, sharing, and dissemination of relevant environmental information and data. The collaboration will also facilitate capacity-building initiatives, including training programmes and knowledge-sharing activities for relevant stakeholders and community members.

A key area of the partnership will be the promotion of public awareness and environmental education, with particular emphasis on the importance of wetland ecosystems and marine biodiversity. These initiatives are expected to encourage greater community understanding, appreciation, and participation in the conservation of Kulhudhuffushi’s natural environment.

The partnership reflects a shared commitment by MNU and Kulhudhuffushi City Council to advance evidence-based environmental conservation through research, knowledge exchange, and community engagement. It also provides a platform for strengthening institutional and local capacity to address environmental challenges and support the sustainable management of the island’s natural ecosystems.

Through this collaboration, MNU and Kulhudhuffushi City Council aim to contribute to the protection of biodiversity while fostering greater environmental awareness and stewardship within the community.
