Oratory and debate grow from five schools into an inter-island learning platform

2024 TO 2026

School participation increased by 160 per cent as the programme expanded from five schools in 2024 to 13 schools across Addu and Fuvahmulah in 2026.

Nine Addu schools participated in 2025. By 2026, the programme had reached 13 schools across two island communities, while six organisations also participated in the debate component introduced in 2025.

Training remained central to the initiative. Two sessions were provided in each of the first two years, increasing to three in 2026 in response to school needs. Support was also made available to students who were not selected for final competition teams, widening the programme’s learning value beyond the stage.

The initiative brought together MNU Student Union, SSL, Dhondheeni, Addu City Council, MNU, MNU Hithadhoo Campus, the Heritage Ministry, Dhivehibahuge Academy, MNU alumni and participating schools. Through speaking, argument, language and cultural content, young people practised confidence, critical thinking and respectful public participation.

Through this work, MNU Hithadhoo Campus contributed directly to SDG 4 – Quality Education, particularly Target 4.7 on culture citizenship and education for sustainable development. The activity also supported SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities; SDG 16 – Peace Justice and Strong Institutions; SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals. Within the MNU Strategic Plan 2026–2030, it advanced Goal 3 – Enhancing the Maldivian Identity; Goal 7 – Wider Engagement with Society; Goal 9 – Student-Centred Excellence; Goal 10 – National Regional and International Engagement.
