The Maldives National University (MNU) re-opened the MNU Fire and Survival Training Centre on 5th February 2024 located at Villimale, Maldives following major infrastructure enhancements, including the construction of quay walls and the installation of a totally enclosed lifeboat, a free-fall lifeboat, and three fire-fighting container units (in compliance with IMO Model Course 2.03 standards).
The facility is equipped to deliver training for the following IMO Model Courses: Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques (Model Course 1.19); Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (Model Course 1.20); Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boats) (Model Course 1.23); and Advanced Training in Fire Fighting (Model Course 2.03).
The upgraded facility strengthens national capacity to deliver internationally recognized maritime safety training at an affordable cost, significantly benefiting the Maldivian maritime community. This initiative contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by enhancing access to high-quality technical training, while also supporting SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through workforce development and infrastructure advancement.
