Open Day event

11 July 2026

On 11 and 12 July 2026, the Centre for Maritime Studies (CMS), together with its industry stakeholder Maldives State Shipping (MSS), participated in the Maldives National University (MNU) Open Day (Fahi Dhuvas) event.

The main purpose of the event was to provide prospective students with information about the academic programmes and career opportunities available at MNU for those interested in pursuing careers in the maritime and shipping industry.

During the event, CMS provided information on career opportunities at sea, outlining the career progression from Junior Officer to Chief Mate and ultimately to Master (Captain). Visitors were also introduced to the education, training, certification, and professional development pathways associated with careers at sea.

The MSS team complemented this by providing information on career opportunities ashore within the maritime industry. These included areas such as ship operations, chartering, maritime safety, human resources, information technology (IT), and technical services.

The participation of CMS and MSS provided prospective students with a broader understanding of the maritime sector by demonstrating that career opportunities extend beyond seagoing positions to a wide range of professional roles ashore.

The collaboration between CMS and MSS also highlighted the importance of industry–academia engagement in promoting maritime education and developing a future-ready maritime workforce for the Maldives
