Malé, Maldives – September 14, 2025 – The Maldives National University (MNU), in partnership with Dhiraagu, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, WAMCO, IEEE Maldives Subsection, and ICEST2025, is proud to announce the E-Waste Hackathon 2025 – a youth-driven initiative aimed at addressing the pressing issue of electronic waste in the Maldives.
The hackathon will take place from 28th September to 7th October 2025, bringing together students, young innovators, and environmental enthusiasts to find practical, scalable, and creative solutions for managing and reducing electronic waste.
Themed “Innovating for a Circular Economy: Tackling the E-Waste Crisis”, the hackathon invites high school, college, and university students to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams of three to five members. Participants will combine expertise in technology, design, engineering, and sustainability to address pressing issues surrounding e-waste recycling, upcycling, and public awareness. This initiative seeks to not only address the growing e-waste problem but also to foster innovation and environmental responsibility among Maldivian youth.
The week-long event will feature:
Site visits to local waste management facilities.
Winning teams will be awarded cash prizes and recognized for their creativity, feasibility, scalability, and environmental impact.
“This hackathon empowers our youth to be part of the solution to one of today’s most critical environmental challenges,” said Mr. Ahmed Aslam Waheed, Lecturer from MNU. “Through collaboration, innovation, and education, we can pave the way toward a more sustainable and circular economy for the Maldives.”
