MNU Signs MoU with Soneva CSM to Strengthen Marine Research and Conservation

Malé, Maldives – [30 September 2025] – The Maldives National University (MNU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Soneva Conservation and Sustainability Maldives (Soneva CSM) to foster collaboration in marine conservation, with a special focus on coral reef research and restoration.

Under this partnership, Soneva CSM will provide MNU students with opportunities to participate in research projects and internships, offering practical, hands-on experience in coral reef ecology and marine conservation. The agreement also paves the way for the exchange of research findings between the two institutions, while creating a platform for future joint research initiatives in the field of marine science.

Soneva CSM, a registered non-governmental organization in the Maldives supported by Soneva Resorts, is dedicated to safeguarding marine ecosystems and advancing conservation science. Its work includes coral reef restoration, marine biodiversity monitoring, and community engagement programs that encourage sustainable practices.

The MNU College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences is home to the country’s leading Marine Science program, equipping students with theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in marine biology, oceanography, and resource management. The program plays a vital role in developing local capacity to safeguard the Maldives’ unique and fragile marine environment.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, representatives from both institutions highlighted the importance of collaborative research in addressing the growing environmental challenges facing the Maldives’ marine ecosystems.

This MoU represents a significant step towards enhancing academic-industry partnerships, strengthening conservation efforts, and empowering the next generation of Maldivian marine scientists.
