The Chief Librarian of The Maldives National University (MNU) Mr. Hussain Haleem, represented MNU Library at the International Conference on Library & Information Sciences (ICLIS), organized by the Sri Lanka Library Association and the University of Peradeniya, from 26–28 June 2025.
The conference brought together approximately 150 participants, with research papers presented across a broad range of contemporary areas in library and information science. The programme also featured keynote addresses by three distinguished speakers, providing perspectives on the changing role of libraries and information professionals in an increasingly digital and knowledge-driven environment.
Key areas explored during the conference included emerging trends in information services, library education, transformative leadership, data privacy and ethics, library outreach and development, preservation of cultural heritage, open access and e-learning, and the evolving role of library and information communities in the digital and AI era. Discussions also addressed administrative, knowledge and innovation management, as well as the contribution of information services to tourism and broader development.
As part of the professional programme, participants visited the University of Peradeniya Library, Kandy Public Library, and Colombo Public Library. These visits provided opportunities to observe different approaches to library services, collection management, user engagement, facilities and institutional practices.
Participation in ICLIS 2025 provided valuable exposure to emerging international practices, research and innovations in library and information services. The knowledge and professional connections gained through the conference will contribute to MNU Library’s continuing efforts to strengthen its services, embrace emerging technologies, enhance access to information, and support the teaching, learning and research priorities of the University.
