The Maldives National University (MNU) has officially announced the introduction of six new postgraduate programs, as part of its ongoing commitment to expanding higher education opportunities and developing highly skilled professionals to meet the evolving needs of the nation.

With this addition, the total number of PhD programs offered by MNU has increased from 18 to 21, a major milestone for the University.
Speaking at the press conference, Vice Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam highlighted that the new programs are a significant investment in the future of the country, allowing Maldivian students to pursue advanced studies without having to leave the Maldives. She thanked the Faculties of MNU, the University’s academic staff, the wider MNU community, and all foreign intellectuals who contributed to the programs. She also thanked the government for its continued support of human resource development and education in the Maldives and extended particular thanks to the Maldives Qualification Authority for maintaining rigorous standards in the country’s higher education sector.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam further noted that the expansion of postgraduate education reflects MNU’s vision of fostering a strong research culture while addressing the country’s growing need for highly qualified professionals and researchers across diverse disciplines.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr. Raheema Abdul Raheem also spoke, outlining the courses being introduced, those already implemented at MNU, and those planned for the future.
The Deans of the respective faculties introducing the new programs also spoke about the courses relevant to their faculties, highlighting their significance and their contribution to advancing research, professional practice, and academic excellence within their fields.
Registrar Mohamed Laamir addressed the media on the implementation timeline, announcing that the programs are scheduled to commence with the February 2027 intake.
