The Maldives National University concluded the workshop on “Capacity Building of Secondary Mathematics Teachers for Teaching Students with Complex Learning Profiles (SCLP)”, conducted for secondary mathematics teachers from the Kaafu-Vaavu region. The closing ceremony was attended by Dr. Aishath Wadheefa, Minister of State for Education, Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development and Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam, Vice Chancellor of The Maldives National University, as the Chief Guest.
The workshop was conducted as part of an AEDP project funded by the world bank, project led by the Department of Inclusive Education (DoIE) of the Ministry of Education Higher Education and Skills Development, in collaboration with The Maldives National University, with the aim of strengthening the capacity of in-service secondary mathematics teachers to effectively support students with diverse learning needs.
Through the project, MNU contributed its expertise in higher education and skills development, supporting teachers in building the knowledge, confidence and practical skills required to create more inclusive mathematics learning environments. The training placed particular emphasis on practical classroom strategies that teachers can apply to support students with complex learning profiles and enable diverse learners to participate meaningfully in mathematics education.
Across the workshops, teachers were introduced to strategies for supporting seven learning profiles: Autism, Dyscalculia, ADHD, Dyslexia and Dysgraphia, Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment, and Gifted and Talented Learners. The sessions focused not only on understanding these learning profiles, but also on practical approaches for adapting mathematics teaching and learning to better accommodate individual learners.
The project achieved significant national coverage, with training conducted across five regions, bringing together teachers representing 28 atolls, through a total of 12 workshops. The broad reach of the initiative reflects a commitment to strengthening inclusive education and ensuring that teachers across the country are equipped to respond to diverse learning needs.
The initiative also contributes to several interconnected United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It directly supports SDG 4: Quality Education by strengthening teachers’ capacity to provide inclusive and equitable learning opportunities. It also advances SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities by promoting greater participation and support for learners with diverse educational needs. Through investment in teacher capacity and professional development, the project further contributes to SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, while its nationwide implementation demonstrates the importance of SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, bringing together the Ministry of Education Higher Education and Skills Development and The Maldives National University to strengthen education and skills development at the national level.
By combining teacher capacity building, inclusive education practices and institutional collaboration, the project contributes to creating more responsive learning environments and strengthening the capacity of the Maldivian education system to support every learner.
