MNU Celebrates 52nd Anniversary with Tree-Planting Initiative

01st September 2025

The Maldives National University (MNU) commemorated its 52nd anniversary with a special tree-planting ceremony held on the University premises. The event was graced by the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Hon. Thoriq Ibrahim, and attended by the University Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, senior management, staff, council members, and students.

In alignment with the Government’s Five Million Trees initiative, MNU has officially joined the programme and commenced tree-planting activities across its campuses. The ceremony marked the launch of a comprehensive greening project initiated by the Maldives National University Students’ Union (MNUSU), aimed at promoting greener and more sustainable environments throughout the University’s campuses.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor expressed pride in the initiative and commended the leadership demonstrated by the Students’ Union. He highlighted the importance of engaging students in environmental activities, noting that their active participation as future leaders would contribute to national efforts to build a greener and more sustainable Maldives.

Beyond environmental conservation, the project aims to strengthen friendship, solidarity, and a shared sense of responsibility among the MNU community across its campuses. By bringing students and staff together, the initiative encourages collective action and raises awareness of the importance of protecting the natural environment.

Each tree planted represents a contribution towards a greener future and reinforces the importance of environmental stewardship for generations to come. Through this initiative, MNU reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and to fostering a university community that values environmental responsibility.

The tree-planting initiative connects environmental protection with education, climate action, and collaboration. By involving students and staff in greening activities, MNU promotes environmental awareness and encourages responsible action to protect natural ecosystems. These efforts contribute to climate resilience and the conservation of terrestrial environments, while providing opportunities for students to develop a deeper understanding of sustainability. The collaboration between MNU, its Students’ Union, and the national tree-planting programme also demonstrates the importance of collective efforts in achieving lasting environmental benefits.
