National Suicide Prevention Strategy Validation Meeting 2025
The National Suicide Prevention Strategy – Maldives was developed to provide a coordinated, evidence-based framework for preventing suicide and suicidal behaviour across the lifespan. The strategy focuses on mental health promotion, stigma reduction, early identification and referral, psychosocial support, capacity building, surveillance, research, postvention, and multisectoral collaboration. It promotes community resilience and equitable access to mental health support, including for vulnerable and underserved populations.
The strategy establishes a national framework for strengthening suicide prevention through awareness, intervention and postvention. Expected impacts include improved mental health and suicide prevention awareness, increased help-seeking, reduced stigma, stronger community resilience, early identification and referral of people at risk, and more accessible psychosocial support. It also strengthens capacity building, research, surveillance and coordinated action across health, education, justice, social services, NGOs and communities.
