Maldives Customs Services Officers Complete Japanese Language Training Programme

29 September 2026

The Faculty of Arts at Maldives National University (MNU), in collaboration with the Maldives Customs Service and the Japan Foundation, successfully conducted a Japanese Language Training Programme for Customs Officers from 10 August to 21 September 2026. The programme concluded with a closing ceremony held on 29 September 2026, celebrating the participants’ completion of the training and their progress in using Japanese for professional communication.

The 30-hour training programme was designed to provide Customs officers with practical Japanese language skills relevant to their professional responsibilities, particularly in communicating with Japanese travellers at the airport. The training focused on useful language that officers can apply in common interactions, enabling them to communicate more confidently and effectively in situations related to Customs procedures.

Throughout the programme, participants were introduced to basic Japanese greetings, self-introductions, and practical expressions used in professional interactions. Particular attention was given to language required during Customs procedures, including asking questions related to restricted and taxable goods.

The practical nature of the programme enabled participants to develop their language skills through interactive learning activities. Role-playing exercises provided opportunities for officers to practise realistic Customs-related conversations and apply the expressions introduced during the training. By the end of the programme, participants were able to communicate in simple Japanese and demonstrate their learning through practical scenarios.

The training provided more than an introduction to the Japanese language. It also supported participants in developing greater confidence in communicating with Japanese travellers and understanding the importance of effective communication in professional service environments. The programme demonstrated how targeted language training can respond to specific workplace needs while contributing to the continuous professional development of public-sector personnel.

The closing ceremony on 29 September 2026 marked the successful completion of the programme and provided an opportunity to recognise the participants’ commitment to learning and professional development. The ceremony also highlighted the value of collaboration between educational institutions, government organisations, and international partners in developing specialised learning opportunities that respond to workplace needs.

The initiative contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education by providing practical, skills-based learning and creating opportunities for continuous professional development. By equipping Customs officers with additional communication skills directly relevant to their workplace responsibilities, the programme also supports SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, particularly through strengthening professional competencies and workplace capacity.

The collaboration between the Faculty of Arts, Maldives Customs Service, and Japan Foundation further reflects the importance of institutional and international cooperation in creating relevant educational opportunities. In this regard, the programme contributes to SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, demonstrating how partnerships can support knowledge exchange, professional capacity building, and the delivery of targeted learning initiatives.

The successful completion of the Customs Officers’ Japanese Language Training Programme reflects the Faculty of Arts’ commitment to providing responsive and practical language education that connects academic expertise with professional needs. Through such collaborative initiatives, MNU continues to support lifelong learning, workforce development, and meaningful partnerships that contribute to the professional growth of individuals and institutions.
