The High Commission of Bangladesh in the Maldives, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts of The Maldives National University (MNU), commemorated International Mother Language Day 2026 with a special ceremony held at the MNU Business School Auditorium.
The event aimed to raise awareness among youth on the importance of preserving mother tongues and to foster meaningful dialogue on this year’s theme, “The Role of Youth in Multilingual Education.” The programme brought together diplomats, academics, students, and distinguished guests to reflect on the cultural, educational, and social significance of linguistic diversity.
The ceremony commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran by MNU student Mariyam Shana Mohamed. This was followed by welcome remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Mr. Asim Abdul Sattar, who underscored the vital role of language in safeguarding cultural identity and strengthening national heritage.
Delivering his address, His Excellency Dr. Md. Nazmul Islam, High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Maldives, highlighted the historical significance of International Mother Language Day and its deep connection to the language movement that shaped the independence of Bangladesh. He further emphasized the global importance of protecting native languages and acknowledged ongoing international efforts dedicated to their preservation.
The programme featured a cultural segment in which Mr. Md. Moinul Hossain and Ms. Mahwin Parvez presented a moving recital of traditional Bengali poetry, celebrating the richness of linguistic heritage.
A key highlight of the event was the panel discussion titled “The Role of Youth in Protecting Mother Languages.” Moderated by Ms. Aida Hammad, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Arts, the panel brought together Ms. Zulfa Ibrahim, Vice President of the Dhivehi Bahuge Academy; Dr. Aminath Zahir and Mr. Anwar Ibrahim, Senior Lecturers at MNU; and Dr. Sadia Haque, a specialized dental professional from Bangladesh. The discussion explored the responsibilities of younger generations in sustaining multilingual education and advancing inclusive language policies.
The ceremony’s Chief Guest, the President of the Dhivehi Bahuge Academy, delivered a keynote address focusing on the role of language in national development and social cohesion. He also reflected on the Academy’s achievements and outlined its vision for strengthening linguistic preservation initiatives in the future.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered through traditional Maldivian Raivaru (lyrical verses), performed by MNU student Aishath Zasha Shukuree, adding a distinct cultural touch to the proceedings.
Senior officials from both the High Commission of Bangladesh and The Maldives National University reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration in promoting linguistic diversity, cultural awareness, and youth engagement in language preservation initiatives.
