The Maldives National University (MNU) has reinforced its commitment to workplace health and safety through a first aid training programme designed to equip senior administrative officers and administrative officers with essential knowledge and practical awareness to respond appropriately to common health emergencies.
The programme focused on strengthening emergency preparedness within the university by helping administrative personnel understand their role in providing initial assistance before professional medical support becomes available. Recognizing that timely and appropriate action can make a significant difference during an emergency, the training highlighted the importance of remaining alert, responding responsibly, and seeking medical assistance when necessary.
A central component of the training was introducing fundamental first aid principles, including providing appropriate initial assistance, helping preserve life, and taking measures to minimize the effects of injuries while awaiting qualified medical help. These principles were presented as essential elements of a safe and supportive working environment.
The programme also aimed to strengthen participants’ ability to recognize situations requiring immediate attention and understand the importance of responding within the limits of their training. By emphasizing appropriate decision-making and awareness of personal responsibilities, the session encouraged a measured and safety-conscious approach to workplace emergencies.
Familiarization with first aid equipment formed another important part of the training. Participants were introduced to the contents of a first aid box and their relevance in providing initial assistance. This component sought to improve staff awareness of available emergency supplies and their role in supporting basic first aid responses.
Beyond developing individual knowledge, the initiative highlighted the importance of shared responsibility for health and safety across university operations. Administrative staff frequently interact with students, colleagues, and visitors, making emergency awareness a valuable workplace competency that can contribute to a more responsive and supportive campus environment.
The training further underscored the role of continuous professional development in strengthening institutional readiness for unexpected situations. By improving staff confidence and understanding of appropriate first aid responses, MNU aims to promote safer working practices and reinforce a culture of preparedness across its administrative services.
Aligned with priorities of good health and well-being, decent work, occupational health and safety, lifelong learning, professional capacity development, emergency preparedness, and safe and inclusive institutions, the programme reflects MNU’s ongoing efforts to foster a university environment where staff are better prepared to respond responsibly to health-related emergencies and contribute to the safety and well-being of the wider campus community.
