The Maldives National University (MNU) has reinforced its commitment to student-centered education through a professional development programme on “Effective Teaching & Learning in Higher Education,” designed to strengthen lecturers’ instructional skills and promote more engaging, inclusive, and responsive learning experiences.
Developed in response to professional development needs identified through student feedback, the training highlighted the importance of aligning teaching practices with learners’ expectations, evolving educational demands, and advancements in technology. The initiative reflects MNU’s emphasis on using student perspectives to inform improvements in teaching quality and academic delivery.
The programme introduced academic staff to fundamental adult learning theories, contemporary teaching methods, and instructional strategies relevant to higher education. Particular attention was given to understanding how adult learners acquire knowledge and how lecturers can apply these principles to create purposeful, interactive, and effective learning environments.
A central focus of the training was the role of clearly defined learning outcomes in guiding instructional planning and delivery. Academic staff explored how aligning teaching strategies with intended learning outcomes can improve the coherence of academic programmes, strengthen student engagement, and support meaningful learning experiences.
The session also encouraged lecturers to critically reflect on their existing teaching approaches and consider ways to adapt instructional methods to accommodate diverse learning needs. Recognizing the changing technological landscape, the programme emphasized the importance of flexibility, innovation, and continuous professional learning in maintaining effective teaching practices.
Beyond individual classroom improvements, the initiative highlighted the wider role of academic staff development in strengthening institutional teaching standards and promoting a culture of educational excellence. By connecting student feedback with targeted professional training, MNU aims to foster greater responsiveness and continuous improvement across its academic programmes.
The training aligns with broader priorities of quality education, inclusive and equitable learning, lifelong learning, digital adaptability, professional capacity development, and educational innovation. Through continued investment in teaching competencies, MNU seeks to create more engaging, accessible, and student-centred higher education experiences that support academic achievement and long-term learner development.
