MNU Strengthens Assessment Fairness and Academic Standards Through Third Batch of Marking and Moderation Training

21 November 2024

The Maldives National University (MNU) has continued its efforts to strengthen assessment quality and academic integrity through the third batch of its “Marking and Moderation” workshop, focusing on fair, valid, and reliable evaluation practices across higher education programmes.

The workshop was designed to strengthen academic staff’s understanding of consistent marking practices and the role of moderation in maintaining assessment standards. As student achievement is evaluated across different courses, groups, and assessment periods, the programme highlighted the importance of applying clear and shared criteria to ensure that academic judgements remain transparent and defensible.

A central focus of the training was the consistent application of marking criteria when evaluating student work. The programme explored how lecturers can use established assessment standards to guide marking decisions, reduce inconsistencies, and ensure that students are assessed against appropriate learning expectations.

The workshop also examined moderation as an essential quality assurance process. Academic staff explored how differences in marking judgements can be reviewed and discussed to promote greater consistency, particularly when multiple lecturers are involved in evaluating student performance.

Maintaining fairness across student groups and assessment periods was another key emphasis of the programme. The training highlighted the need for shared academic standards that support comparable assessment decisions, helping ensure that students are evaluated consistently regardless of when or by whom their work is marked.

Beyond the technical aspects of marking, the workshop encouraged lecturers to reflect critically on the reasoning behind assessment decisions. This reflective approach emphasised the importance of professional judgement, accountability, and evidence-based evaluation in safeguarding the credibility of student results.

The third batch of the programme also reflects MNU’s continued focus on professional learning as a means of strengthening academic quality assurance. By providing further opportunities to engage with marking and moderation principles, the university aims to support greater confidence among lecturers and encourage continuous improvement in assessment practices.

Reliable assessment processes are central to maintaining student trust and ensuring that academic achievements accurately reflect demonstrated knowledge and skills. Strengthening these processes can also support clearer academic expectations, more equitable student experiences, and the integrity of qualifications awarded by the university.

Aligned with priorities of quality education, inclusive and equitable learning, lifelong learning, academic integrity, transparent evaluation, professional capacity development, and institutional accountability, the workshop reflects MNU’s commitment to maintaining rigorous academic standards and promoting fair, consistent, and credible assessment across its programmes.
