The Maldives National University, in collaboration with UNFPA has concluded a study on Socio economic Drivers of Low Fertility in the Maldives. The dissemination event for this landmark study was held at the Maldives National University on the 15th of May 2025 with attendees across various ministries, diplomatic missions and other stakeholders.
The session commenced with opening remarks from the Country Director of UNFPA Maldives, Mr. Kunle Adeniyi. He highlighted the shifting demographics in the Maldives as well as across the globe and reaffirmed UNFPA’s commitment to empowering women and young people to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
Results were presented by Dr. Tatiana Karabchuk, consultant with UNFPA, who has over 20 years of experience in labor and demographic research.

The Maldives National University and UNFPA hopes that the results of the study will help inform national planning and policy level decision-making in the coming future to address the declining fertility rates in the Maldives.
