The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), The Maldives National University (MNU), provided 30 Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science students with hands-on clinical experience through placements at tertiary and regional-level hospitals in the Greater Malé Region and regional areas from 19 October to 27 November.
The clinical posting provided students with an opportunity to apply laboratory procedures and knowledge acquired through their academic studies in professional healthcare settings. By engaging with clinical laboratory practice, students strengthened their practical skills and gained experience in applying theoretical learning to real-world professional contexts.
The placement formed an important component of the students’ professional preparation, helping to bridge classroom-based education with the expectations and practices of the medical laboratory profession. Exposure to hospital laboratory environments enabled students to further develop practical competencies while gaining a clearer understanding of the role of medical laboratory professionals within healthcare services.
Three MNU staff members supported the clinical posting alongside the 30 participating students. The supportive learning environment was positively reflected in student feedback, with one student noting that “the instructor’s supportive and friendly demeanor created a calm and encouraging environment, making the learning process enjoyable and engaging.”
Beyond student learning, the clinical posting also strengthened engagement between MNU and participating hospitals. Such partnerships provide an important link between university-based health education and the healthcare sector, supporting opportunities for students to develop professionally within authentic clinical environments.
The initiative contributes to the Faculty’s commitment to preparing graduates with the practical knowledge and competencies required for the health workforce. It also supports Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through health workforce preparation and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through experiential and practice-based learning. The engagement further reflects the value of partnerships between higher education institutions and healthcare providers in strengthening health professional education.
Through continued clinical education and collaboration with healthcare institutions, FHS supports the development of medical laboratory professionals equipped to contribute effectively to laboratory services and the wider health system in the Maldives.
