Dr. Ahmed Riyaz Jauharee, Dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at the Maldives National University (MNU), is contributing his extensive expertise to the development of the Maldives’ Fisheries and Ocean Resources Master Plan (2025–2045). Dr. Jauharee brings over three decades of experience bridging research, education, and policy in Maldivian fisheries.
The 20-year strategic framework, spearheaded by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, aims to ensure the sustainable management and development of the nation’s fisheries and ocean resources over the next two decades. The plan focuses on optimising the use of marine resources while maximising economic benefits for the country. The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has conducted stakeholder consultations to gather insights from government agencies, private sector organisations, and NGOs to inform the comprehensive strategic framework. The plan is being developed with support from the World Bank.
The establishment of CFOS itself—a partnership between the Fisheries Ministry and MNU—underscores the administration’s commitment to developing technical expertise for the fisheries sector. MNU’s involvement in the master plan development highlights the university’s expanding role in national policy formulation and its commitment to advancing sustainable fisheries management in the Maldives.
