Marine Science Students in Haa Alif Atoll Gain Hands-On Field Experience Through CFOS-Led Sessions

Marine Science students from Haa Alif Atoll Education Centre participated in a comprehensive program of practical field activities and theory sessions conducted by Dr. Ahmed Riyaz Jauharee, Dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at the Maldives National University. The initiative formed part of CFOS’s commitment to strengthening ocean literacy and building practical skills among students in the northern atoll, where marine resources are central to local livelihoods and culture.

The theory sessions covered fundamental topics in marine biology, oceanography, and reef ecology, providing students with the scientific foundation needed to understand the ecosystems they would later explore in the field. The programme also introduced students to the cultural and historical dimensions of marine resource use in the region. By combining theory with hands-on field experience, the initiative aims to inspire students to pursue careers in marine science and conservation, while fostering a deeper appreciation for the marine environments that sustain their communities and prepare the students for their O’ Level examination.
