Seminar for Marine Science students

15 October 2024

More than 200 marine science students from schools across Malé gathered at the Maldives National University (MNU) for a seminar organised by College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) in collaboration with Reefscapers. The event offered students a firsthand look at the pioneering coral restoration and marine conservation work being carried out by Reefscapers at Four Seasons Resorts Maldives.

During the seminar, Reefscapers representatives shared insights into their long-running coral propagation programme and turtle rescue work. Students learned about the revolutionary coral frame technique—developed by Reefscapers and now adopted by conservationists worldwide—in which small coral fragments are attached to metal frames and planted on the seabed to regenerate damaged reefs. The presentation also highlighted Reefscapers’ broader conservation efforts, including sea turtle rehabilitation and dolphin sightings. Students gained insight into how the team responded to the 2024 global bleaching event by relocating corals from shallow waters to cooler depths in a bid to save them.

The collaboration between Reefscapers and CFOS under an MoU reflects MNU’s ongoing commitment to strengthening ties with environmental organisations and providing students with exposure to real-world conservation science . By bringing Reefscapers’ work directly to young Maldivians, the seminar aimed to inspire the next generation of marine biologists and conservationists to take an active role in safeguarding the nation’s fragile reef ecosystems.
