The Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) Malé officially launched Advanced Level Marine Science programme, marking the first time the subject is being offered at the higher secondary level in the Maldives. The launch was led by Dr. Ahmed Riyaz Jauharee, Dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at the Maldives National University, who delivered the keynote address emphasising the importance of the subject in equipping young Maldivians with the knowledge to understand the nation’s rich marine biodiversity and address pressing environmental challenges.
The introduction of A Level Marine Science comes 40 years after Fisheries Science was first offered as an O Level subject in the Maldives in 1984. The new programme represents a significant expansion of the country’s marine education pathway, creating new academic opportunities for students aspiring to pursue careers in marine research, conservation, and policy. By offering marine science at the Advanced Level, CHSE is helping to build a pipeline of locally trained talent that will support the Maldives’ blue economy and long-term environmental sustainability.
