The Maldives National University (MNU) and the Olive Ridley Project (ORP) – Maldives have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a significant step forward for marine conservation and education in the Indian Ocean region. The agreement was signed at MNU’s central campus by Vice Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam on behalf of the university and Fathimath Isha Afeef, Executive Director of ORP–Maldives, representing the organisation.
This strategic partnership combines ORP’s frontline expertise in sea turtle veterinary care and research with MNU’s academic leadership and local reach, co-creating a new model of conservation that builds lasting local capacity while addressing urgent ecological challenges. Central to the collaboration is the co-development and delivery of the region’s first specialised course in sea turtle medicine and surgery. Designed by ORP’s veterinary team, the programme will equip MNU marine science students and local veterinarians with critical skills in trauma care, rehabilitation, and surgical intervention for injuries caused by ghost gear and other human-related threats.
The MoU also expands opportunities for collaborative research, enabling MNU students to work alongside ORP scientists on projects such as population monitoring, satellite tracking, and habitat assessment. By embedding advanced scientific training and specialised veterinary skills within MNU’s academic framework, the partnership ensures that the Maldives can develop its own experts to support national marine conservation efforts in a sustainable, locally driven way.
