Student-Led Education Session Raises Awareness of Hypertension

12 May 2025

Bachelor of Primary Health Care students at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), The Maldives National University (MNU), led a continuing medical education session on hypertension on 12 May 2025. Organised by the Department of Public Health, “The Pressure is Real: Silent but Serious” brought together 50 staff and students.

The student presenters addressed risk factors, the often symptom-free nature of hypertension, complications, screening, lifestyle changes and treatment adherence. Interactive discussion helped participants connect prevention and early detection with the wider burden of noncommunicable disease. The session also gave students practice in communicating health information to an academic audience.

Student-led professional education also strengthens presentation and health communication skills alongside the clinical and public health topics being taught.

The session supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through hypertension prevention and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through student-led teaching and professional learning.
