Community Health Workers Explore Practical Screening and Outreach

5 February 2025

UNICEF organized a capacity building workshop for 30 community health workers from selected UNICEF convergence islands on 5 February 2025. The workshop focused on community health promotion, preventive care and ways to strengthen the work of Public Health Units.

Participants shared experiences, identified training and support needs, and discussed how to incorporate body mass index measurement, blood pressure monitoring, blood glucose testing and body fat analysis into community events, outreach and facility services. They valued the practical exchange and recommended continued training and supervision. Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) personnel from The Maldives National University (MNU) were listed among those involved.

Community-based screening can make preventive health services more visible and accessible when it is integrated into established outreach and local health activities.

The workshop relates to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through preventive screening and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through workforce training. Exchange among UNICEF, community health workers and health-sector participants also supports SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
