Students from the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at The Maldives National University (MNU) engaged approximately 50 community members in a mass exercise session at Isravehenge Nadhee Mal’e on 9 September 2025, highlighting the role of physical activity and preventive rehabilitation in promoting healthy ageing.
The session involved one FHS staff member and seven MNU students, who led participants through an educational and practical programme focused on maintaining physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. The activity began with a discussion on the role of physical activity, providing participants with information on how regular movement can contribute to health and wellbeing.
Following the discussion, the students conducted a mass exercise session and guided participants through a cool-down activity. The practical component provided an accessible opportunity for community members to participate in physical activity while reinforcing the information presented during the session.
The students also introduced the concept of preventive rehabilitation and its relevance to healthy ageing. By connecting preventive approaches with physical activity, the session highlighted the contribution of rehabilitation-focused health education to maintaining health and wellbeing across the life course.
For the participating MNU students, the activity provided practical experience in communicating health information and facilitating physical activity within a community setting. It also enabled students to apply aspects of their health sciences education beyond the classroom while engaging directly with members of the community.
The initiative strengthened the connection between FHS education and community health promotion, providing a practical platform for students and staff to contribute to awareness of healthy ageing and the benefits of physical activity.
The activity contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through its focus on physical activity, preventive approaches and community health education. By combining student-led learning with community engagement, the session also demonstrated the practical role of health sciences education in supporting healthier communities.
