The Maldives National University Business School Joins United Nations Population Fund and Maldives Bureau of Statistics for Population Situation Analysis Stakeholder Workshop

6th August 2025

The Maldives National University Business School (MNUBS) participated in a Stakeholder Workshop on the Population Situation Analysis, a joint initiative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS), and the faculty.

The workshop was led by Professor Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi, a distinguished demographer whose current affiliations include Academy Fellow at the Vienna Institute of Demography, Full Professor (on leave) at the University of Tehran, Honorary Professor at the Australian National University, and Guest Research Scholar at the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders to contribute to the Population Situation Analysis, which examines population dynamics and their implications for national development. Through stakeholder engagement and knowledge exchange, the initiative seeks to strengthen the evidence base for understanding demographic trends and informing development priorities.

MNUBS’s participation reflects its commitment to advancing evidence-based policy and contributing academic expertise to national dialogue on population, economic development, and social planning.

The initiative also contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting research, knowledge exchange, and academic engagement; SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by supporting analysis that can inform economic and social planning; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by fostering collaboration among the university, UNFPA, MBS, and other stakeholders.
