FHTS Students Develop Themed High Tea Experience Through Practical Learning

17 October 2025

As part of the Food Service Management Concept Development module in Term 2, 2025, students at the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Studies (FHTS) of The Maldives National University (MNU) organised and delivered a themed High Tea Experience.

The concept featured a carefully curated selection of teas presented within an elegant floral-inspired setting, creating an immersive dining experience for guests. The event combined menu development, presentation and service elements to demonstrate how a food service concept can be developed into a cohesive guest experience.

The High Tea Experience featured an assortment of delicate desserts and savoury bites thoughtfully developed and presented around the floral theme. Through the planning and execution of the event, students applied their academic knowledge of food service management, menu development, event presentation, guest experience and hospitality operations.

The activity provided students with an opportunity to translate a food service concept from the planning stage to practical execution. By working through the different elements of the experience, students developed their understanding of how menu selection, presentation, ambience and service contribute to an integrated hospitality offering.

The practical experience enabled students to strengthen their creativity, planning and service-related skills while applying knowledge in a guest-focused environment. Developing the floral-themed concept also encouraged students to consider how different aspects of food service can be brought together to create a distinctive and cohesive experience.

Such experiential learning provides an important connection between academic learning and the world of work, allowing students to develop industry-relevant competencies through practical application. Experiences such as the High Tea showcase contribute to skills development, professional development and employability by giving students opportunities to practise hospitality concepts in an applied setting.

Through practical and concept-based learning, FHTS continues to support quality education that prepares students to apply their knowledge creatively and confidently within the hospitality and tourism industry.
