FHS Raises Awareness of Adolescent Mental Health Through Public Media Engagement

27 Feburuary 2024

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) contributed to public awareness of adolescent mental health through a media interview with the Children’s Ombudsperson on 27 February 2024, held as part of Adolescents’ Mental Health Days 2024.

Mariyam Ifshan Ahmed participated in the interview, highlighting the importance of recognising and supporting mental health during adolescence. The interview was subsequently shared through social media to reach members of the wider public.

Adolescence is an important developmental period, and increasing awareness of mental health can help young people, families and communities recognise concerns and seek appropriate support when needed. By sharing accessible information through public media, the initiative aimed to encourage greater understanding of adolescent mental health and the importance of early support.

The engagement also provided an opportunity to extend the Faculty’s academic and professional expertise beyond the university community. Collaboration with the Children’s Ombudsperson helped bring mental health information to a broader audience through a platform accessible to the general public.

Public awareness initiatives are an important part of promoting mental health literacy and encouraging supportive environments for young people. The initiative reflects FHS’s commitment to community engagement and to contributing professional knowledge to discussions on issues affecting children and adolescents in the Maldives.

The activity contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through its focus on adolescent mental health, SDG 4 (Quality Education) through public health education and awareness, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration with the Children’s Ombudsperson.
