On 22 October 2024, five students enrolled in the “Certificate III in Marine Operations” programme at the Centre for Maritime Studies, Maldives National University, participated in a structured field-based learning activity at Port of Malé. The visit involved onboard engagement with the vessel M.V. Graphene, providing students with direct exposure to real-world maritime operations.
The field trip was designed to support the completion of an assessment module in “Cargo Work and Ship Stability,” a core competency area within the programme. Under the supervision of the course lecturer, students were briefed on assessment requirements and learning objectives prior to boarding. Practical instruction and demonstrations were delivered onboard by the ship’s captain and chief mate, who provided professional insights into cargo handling procedures, vessel stability considerations, and operational safety practices.
This experiential learning activity complements classroom-based instruction by integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application in a live operational environment. The “Certificate III in Marine Operations” programme prepares students for roles as watchkeeping officers on vessels of less than 3,000 gross tons, and this field engagement plays a critical role in ensuring competency-based training aligned with industry standards. This initiative contributes primarily to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, by delivering hands-on, competency-based technical and vocational training that enhances students’ employability and professional skills (Targets 4.3 and 4.4).
It also supports SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth by preparing students for skilled employment as maritime officers, thereby contributing to workforce development in the maritime sector.
In addition, the activity aligns with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration between Maldives National University and the Maldives State Shipping
