The Maldives National University (MNU) successfully hosted another engaging session of the MNU Speaker Series on 18 May 2026, featuring renowned Maldivian architect, illustrator, and heritage scholar Mohamed Mauroof Jameel, RIBA, Member of ICOMOS. The session, titled “Maldivian Resort Architecture: Towards the Preservation of a Modern Heritage,” provided participants with a fascinating exploration of the Maldives’ architectural legacy and the importance of preserving its modern heritage.
Drawing on more than four decades of professional experience, Mauroof reflected on his remarkable career spanning government service, academia, and private practice, during which he has played a significant role in shaping the architectural and tourism landscape of the Maldives. He shared insights into the evolution of Maldivian resort architecture, highlighting the distinctive design principles that characterised the country’s early resorts and their contribution to the Maldives’ international tourism identity.
A key focus of the presentation was the importance of recognising early resort architecture as an integral part of the nation’s cultural heritage. Mauroof discussed his ongoing work to identify, document, and advocate for the preservation of these pioneering developments, emphasising that safeguarding this modern architectural legacy is essential for understanding the history of tourism and national development in the Maldives.
Participants also gained valuable insights into Mauroof’s contributions to architectural heritage through his extensive publications, exhibitions, and research on coral stone architecture and Maldivian resort design. His presentation highlighted how architecture not only shapes physical spaces but also preserves collective memory, identity, and culture for future generations.
The session formed part of MNU’s continued commitment to providing students and staff with opportunities to engage with distinguished professionals whose expertise bridges academic knowledge with national development. By fostering discussions on heritage conservation, sustainable development, and cultural identity, the Speaker Series encourages students to appreciate the role of research, innovation, and preservation in shaping the future of the Maldives.
The event also reflected MNU’s commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by promoting lifelong learning and knowledge sharing; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, through the preservation of cultural and architectural heritage; SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by recognising the role of tourism in national development; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by encouraging collaboration between academia, industry, and heritage professionals.
