MNU and Maldives Red Crescent Empower 100 Student Leaders Through Psychological First Aid Training

15 July 2026

The Maldives National University (MNU), in collaboration with the Maldives Red Crescent (MRC), successfully concluded a Basic Psychological First Aid (PFA) Training Programme for 100 student leaders, followed by a certificate awarding ceremony recognising their successful completion of the programme.

The training was conducted over two days, with participants divided into four batches to ensure an interactive and practical learning experience. Facilitated by certified trainers from the Maldives Red Crescent, the programme equipped students with the knowledge and skills to provide immediate psychosocial support to individuals experiencing distress while recognizing situations that require professional referral.

Throughout the training, participants were introduced to the principles of Psychological First Aid, including understanding common reactions to crises, applying the internationally recognised “Look, Listen and Link” approach, recognizing complex psychological reactions, making appropriate referrals, and practicing these skills through demonstrations and role-play activities. The programme also emphasized the importance of self-care for those providing support.

Speaking at the certificate ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of MNU highlighted the importance of building a university community that is prepared to respond with empathy, compassion, and confidence during times of crisis. By equipping student leaders with Psychological First Aid skills, the University is strengthening its capacity to foster a safe, supportive, and resilient campus while enabling students to become valuable sources of support for their peers and communities.

The initiative was organised in response to the growing recognition of the importance of mental health and psychosocial wellbeing within higher education. It forms part of the MNU’s broader commitment to promoting student wellbeing, developing responsible leadership, and preparing graduates who are equipped not only with academic knowledge but also with essential life skills that contribute to society.

The programme also contributes directly to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being by promoting mental health awareness and psychosocial support; SDG4: Quality Education by equipping students with practical life skills beyond the classroom; SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions by strengthening resilience and fostering supportive communities; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through the successful collaboration between MNU and the Maldives Red Crescent.

MNU extends its sincere appreciation to the Maldives Red Crescent for their partnership and commitment to strengthening psychosocial support capacity among young people. The University also congratulates all 100 participants on successfully completing the training and looks forward to seeing them apply these valuable skills in supporting their fellow students, their communities, and the nation.
