The Maldives National University (MNU) today celebrated a historic milestone with the convening of the 400th Meeting of the University Council and the official launching ceremony of the University’s Multi-Purpose Building Project.
The foundation stone was jointly unveiled by the Chancellor of the Maldives National University, Dr. Mahmood Shougee, and the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam, during a special ceremony attended by university leadership, council members, staff, and invited guests.
Speaking at the event, Vice Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam highlighted the significance of three landmark achievements being commemorated on the same occasion: the 400th meeting of the University Council, the commencement of the Multi-Purpose Building Project, and the Council’s decision to formally document the history of the Maldives National University.
She noted that these milestones are closely interconnected, reflecting both the University’s rich heritage and its aspirations for future growth. Together, they represent important chapters in MNU’s ongoing journey of institutional development, academic excellence, and national service.
The 400th Meeting of the University Council marks an important moment in the University’s history. Beyond its numerical significance, the milestone provides an opportunity to recognize the dedication and contributions of former and current Council members, Chancellors, Vice Chancellors, faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders who have played a vital role in strengthening higher education in the Maldives.
The commencement of the Multi-Purpose Building Project represents a major investment in the future of the University and the nation. Designed to enhance the academic and student experience, the facility will provide modern learning, research, and social spaces that support innovation, collaboration, and professional development.
The new building will include a canteen, restaurant, student social spaces, a multi-purpose hall, classrooms, seminar rooms, and specialized practical training facilities. It will also accommodate the Centre for Security and Strategic Studies, advanced research laboratories, office spaces, and parking facilities. The development is expected to alleviate existing space constraints while creating a more conducive environment for teaching, learning, and research.
A defining feature of the project is its student- and staff-centered design, which seeks to expand opportunities for academic engagement, leadership development, interdisciplinary collaboration, and research excellence. The facility will strengthen the University’s ability to expand existing academic programs and explore new areas of national importance.
The building will also provide essential support for the continued operation of the School of Medicine until the completion of the permanent Medical School and Teaching Hospital in Hulhumalé.
Recognizing the scale and ambition of the project, construction will be implemented in phases to ensure its sustainable and effective completion. This phased approach reflects MNU’s commitment to responsible development while delivering long-term benefits to students, staff, and the wider community.
The Maldives National University remains committed to advancing higher education, research, and innovation in the Maldives. The launch of the Multi-Purpose Building Project and the celebration of the 400th University Council Meeting reaffirm the University’s vision of creating transformative educational opportunities and contributing to national development.
